Tissue clearing reveals structure of porcine pancreatic islets in situ

Optical tissue transparency permits scalable and informative cellular and molecular investigation of complex tissues in 3D. Organs from large species such as humans and pigs are particularly challenging to render transparent. A new method called SHANEL was successfully used to generate intact transparent adult human brain and kidney. Moreover, application of SHANEL on total pancreas from INS-eGFP transgenic pigs revealed for the spatial distribution of porcine beta cells in situ.
