The new Research Unit FOR 5795 HyperMet – Effects of Muscle Hypertrophy and Atrophy on Metabolic Health investigates how changes in skeletal muscle mass influence metabolism and overall health. Increasing muscle mass is associated with fat loss and protection against conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis, with evidence also suggesting effects on tumour growth. Conversely, muscle atrophy is often linked to fat gain, insulin resistance, osteoporosis and complications in cancer patients. HyperMet aims to uncover the metabolic mechanisms behind these effects by studying metabolism within and between cells, the exchange of metabolites between muscle and blood, and metabolic interactions between muscle and other organs. The researchers will use state-of-the-art approaches including tracer-based metabolic flux analysis, metabolic imaging and arteriovenous metabolomics. Arne Hinrichs and Eckhard Wolf are PIs of a project investigating metabolic effects of genetically of pharmacologically induced muscle hypertrophy in pigs.
