New Review on Xenotransplantation and Exogenesis

Researchers are advancing two promising strategies to tackle the global shortage of donor organs: xenotransplantation and exogenesis. Genetically engineered pig organs have shown encouraging results in preclinical studies and recent human compassionate-use cases involving the heart, kidney, and liver, although long-term survival remains a major challenge. Exogenesis, which seeks to grow human-compatible organs inside animal hosts, has also made early progress. Continued advances in genetic engineering, immune control, and developmental biology could ultimately help expand the supply of transplantable organs.
