Millions of people in Germany are living with diabetes, a condition often associated with serious complications. People with diabetes, for example, have a difourfold higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those without diabetes. The new Collaborative Research Centre SFB 1774 “CARDIO-DIABETES-CROSSTALK” aims to uncover the mechanisms behind this connection. Researchers will investigate the molecular factors and cellular interactions that drive inflammation and metabolic dysfunction, with a particular focus on processes in affected organs and the impact of disrupted energy metabolism on the cardiovascular system. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of how diabetes and cardiovascular disease interact and progress. Simone Renner and Eckhard Wolf are PIs of a project investigating organ crosstalk in pig models for severe insulin deficient diabetes (SIDD) and severe insulin-resistant diabetes (SIRD).
